The Man Who Came to
Dinner takes place in suburban Ohio in the late 1930's. Sheridan
Whiteside (Andrew), a noted radio personality, is in town on one of his
annual lecture circuit tours when he slips and breaks his hip on some
renegade ice. Confined to a wheelchair, Whiteside- who is the
forerunner of great comedic curmudgeons like Archie Bunker and George
Jefferson- takes over the home of his host family, forcing them to hide
upstairs. In the meantime, his long-time secretary, Maggie (played by
Playhouse veteran Kelly Christianson) falls in love with the charming
but unsophisticated local newspaper editor (Adam Jack Arthur in his
Playhouse debut). To keep his secretary from falling in love (and
leaving him to do his own work) and his sanity, Whiteside engages in a
great deal of hilarious shenanigans and inviting the gold-digging
starlet Lorraine Sheldon (played by Guerin Piercy pictured left with
Andrew) to break up the budding love affair. Before it is all over the
outrageous has become commonplace.
In addition to Mr. Prine, the cast includes numerous local performers
and audience favorites such as Rob Storrs, Jackie Blackburn, Ken
Presnell, Ryan Robertson, Mackenzie Pauley, Alice Hutchins, Preston
Tinsley, Emily Gill, Shane Rathburn, Allyson Heidenfelder, Guerin Piercy,
Kelly Christianson, Deena Bingham, Bethany Rowe, Willl Storrs, and Bruce
Chuvala. Matt Burke, Adam Jack Arthur, and Jane Porterfield are all
making their Playhouse debuts with this production. |
